Speed Bump Alert App: How Your Phone Warns You Before a Bump
Yes, some apps warn you about speed bumps before you reach them. A speed bump alert app uses phone sensors and driver reports to map bumps, then warns you by voice. In India it is often called a speed breaker alert app.
Quick answer
- Your phone's accelerometer feels the lift and drop of a speed bump.
- The app saves the bump's location and shares it with other drivers.
- Drivers coming the same way get a voice warning before they reach it.
- Warnings only exist where drivers have already crossed or reported a bump.
Why unmarked speed bumps are a problem
A speed bump slows traffic when drivers see it in time. An unmarked bump, or one hidden at night or in rain, can be hit at full speed.
- Height matters. India's traffic calming guide, IRC:99-2018, says "Rises that are higher than 10 cm may cause damage to vehicles" (IRC:99-2018).
- Unmarked breakers have cost lives. In early 2024 a 34-year-old Chennai man died when his two-wheeler hit an unmarked speed breaker. The editorial says many breakers lack reflective stripes or warning signs (DT Next, 2024).
- Passengers get hurt too. Doctors reported five bus passengers with spine injuries from passing over speed bumps, four of them compression fractures (American Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2005).
What speed bumps are designed for
- India: IRC:99-2018 designs round humps for 20 to 50 km/h. On a hump built for 25 km/h, buses can pass at about 10 km/h (IRC:99-2018, Table 3.1).
- United States: the Federal Highway Administration says speed humps are about 75 to 100 mm (3 to 4 in) high. The traditional 12 ft hump has a design speed of 15 to 20 mph (24 to 32 km/h) (FHWA PEDSAFE).
IRC:99-2018 says humps on minor roads should have "road hump ahead" signs. For national and state highways, it names rumble strips instead (IRC:99-2018).
How does a speed bump alert app work?
An app finds speed bumps the way it finds potholes: by feeling them.
- Feel. The accelerometer measures up-and-down movement many times a second. A bump lifts the vehicle, then drops it.
- Check. The app ignores moments when the phone is moved by hand. The gyroscope helps with that.
- Save. GPS adds the location, and the bump is pinned on a shared map.
- Warn. Drivers heading that way hear a warning before they reach it.
Research shows this works with an ordinary phone. A 2017 study detected speed bumps using "the embedded sensor (accelerometer) in the Smartphone" (Aljaafreh et al., JTEC 2017). A 2020 study built an Android app that detects speed bumps and potholes from accelerometer data (Al-Shargabi et al., TEM Journal 2020).
Drivers can also report bumps by hand. For more on sensor detection, see how pothole detection apps work.
Speed bump or pothole?
The shape of the jolt tells them apart. A bump lifts the vehicle first; a pothole drops it first. Rough road gives a run of smaller shakes. No app gets this right every time, so choose one that lets you remove a wrong warning.
What a good speed bump alert app should do
- Warn by time, not distance. Faster driving needs more room to slow down.
- Speak the warning. You should not need to look at the screen.
- Detect bumps on its own. Tapping the screen while driving is unsafe.
- Offer car and two-wheeler settings. Bikes feel bumps very differently from cars.
- Let you adjust sensitivity. Every vehicle, phone and mount is different.
- Let you remove wrong warnings. Some bumps get removed, and some detections are wrong.
- Respect your privacy. Only the hazard and its location should leave your phone.
- Cover potholes and speed cameras too. One app is easier than three.
How to cross a speed bump safely
The UK Highway Code says that when you approach road humps, "reduce your speed". Keep a reduced speed along the whole stretch, and do not overtake there (Highway Code, Rule 153).
- Slow down before the bump, not on it.
- Cross straight, with both wheels together.
- At night and in rain, expect unmarked bumps on smaller roads.
- Let voice alerts do the work. Never hold the phone while driving.

A free speed breaker alert app for Android
IndiaRoad Map is a free pothole detection app for Android that also detects speed breakers and bad road. It uses the accelerometer and gyroscope. Raw sensor data stays on the phone; only the hazard type and location are shared.
It warns you by voice and on screen about 10 seconds before a hazard, never closer than 100 m. Speed cameras get a warning about 15 seconds ahead. It has Car and Bike modes and sensitivity from 1 to 10. It also has turn-by-turn voice navigation with live traffic, and Android Auto support. Drivers can report speed breakers, potholes, police, accidents, flooding and more.
Warnings depend on drivers who have already been there. Most reports today are in India. If a hazard is gone, tap "Not there?" to remove it. See how detection works for details and limits.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an app that warns about speed bumps?
Yes. Some navigation and road hazard apps warn about speed bumps ahead, using sensors, driver reports or both. Check for voice warnings and coverage on your roads.
Can my phone detect speed bumps?
Yes. Research has shown an ordinary phone's accelerometer can detect speed bumps.
Does a speed bump alert app work on two-wheelers?
It can. Look for a separate bike mode, because a bike feels each bump differently from a car. Mount the phone firmly and rely on voice warnings.
Do speed bump alerts work on Android Auto?
Some apps show them on the car screen. IndiaRoad Map shows hazard warnings and reports on the car screen through Android Auto.
Why didn't I get a warning for a speed bump?
The bump may be new, or nobody using the app has crossed or reported it yet. Some bumps are also missed. Watch the road, and report the bump once you have stopped safely.
IndiaRoad Map is free on Android, with ads. It warns you about potholes, speed breakers and bad road found by other drivers.
